Tramonti

stemma di Tramonti

The name Tramonti comes from the place-name (Transmonti), that it means “beyond mountains”.

Since the Bronze age, in the valley of Tramonti, there were little villages, as in Polvica.

Like in Minori, also in Tramonti Romans built villas. They often discovered  roman ruins in the hamlets of Tramonti.

This town growed up, as Scala; in the beginning there were only hamlets, later, thanks to the trade overseas, also Tramonti began rich.

Then Tramonti, as all town of the coast, followed the sort of Amalfi. Thanks to its position, in the area of Tramonti, Amalfi built some castles to defense its territory. But when the Norman troupe managed  to conquer the castle of Montalto (1127), Amalfi lost its indipendence.

The municipality of Tramonti has 13 villages, where each one developed itself, around a church; their name are:Campinola, Capitignano, Cesarano, Corsano, Figline, Gete, Novella, Paterno-S. Arcangelo, Paterno S.Elia, Pietre,  Polvica, Ponte, Pucara .

To visit...

in the village of Figline, the church of S.Pietro Apostolo, with floor in maiolic, in Gete, the ruins of a church of the XIII century, in Polvica , the church of S.Giovanni, in S.Elia, the church of S.Elia, in Pucara, the church of S.Erasmo, where some painted are ascribed to  Luca Giordano.

Curiosity...

Tramonti always produced basket, used on the coast to bring everythings. Nowaday the production is only for tourism, even if somebody use large baskets to bring lemons from the garden to the street.
