Scala began very important to Amalfi's Dukedom, thanks to its castles. In fact, when the Dukedom subscribed a commercial alliance with Pisa (1126), the treaty mentioned Scala as one of the most important towns of the coast.
The land defence of Amalfi was the castles of Scala. The first monastic knight order of the history was the Cavalieri Ospedalieri of S. Giovanni of Jerusalemn which was born in Scala.
