ScalaScala is one of the most ancient towns of the Amalfi Coast. As for the other towns its fortune was tightly related to Amalfi's.

In the beginning Scala was a farmers town and it hadn't a town center. It later became a proper city thanks to its commerce with the Republic of Amalfi, and it was named "Civitas Scalensis" in the "Tabula de Amalpha" the first code of laws of the Republic.

S. Eustachio ruins - Pontone

Scala began very important to Amalfi's Dukedom, thanks to its castles. In fact, when the Dukedom subscribed a commercial alliance with Pisa (1126), the treaty mentioned Scala as one of the most important towns of the coast.

The land defence of Amalfi was the castles of Scala. The first monastic knight order of the history was the Cavalieri Ospedalieri of S. Giovanni of Jerusalemn which was born in Scala.

Places to visit :.

The Cathedral and the archibishop palace in the town of Scala.
The church of Santa Maria Assunta, built in IX century in Minuta, and the church of S.Giovanni and the ruins of the Basilica of St. Eustachio in Pontone.
